8 Essentials for Welcoming Your Cat Home (Complete Guide)

Adopting a cat is a wonderful decision, but one that requires careful thought. A cat can live 15 to 20 years and needs attention, care, and appropriate equipment. You will be responsible for its well-being and health throughout its life.

It is therefore essential to be sure you can meet its needs, and I won't lie to you, it can cost money (food, vet care, litter, accessories...). Before getting a cat, make sure you can be present for it and give it the care and attention it deserves.

Now that your decision is well thought out, here are, in my opinion, the 8 essential items to ensure your new four-legged companion lacks nothing:

1. A litter box (and litter):

Cats are very clean animals and need a place to relieve themselves. A litter box is therefore essential for your cat. Place the litter box in a quiet area, away from too much traffic or commotion. There are different types of litter (clumping, silica, biodegradable...). Don't hesitate to try several to determine which one will suit you and your cat best.

2. Food and water bowls:

Provide two separate, easy-to-clean bowls. Tip: place the water bowl away from the food bowl, as cats prefer to drink away from their meals.

3. Quality food:

It is important to choose quality food for your cat that meets its nutritional needs. You can opt for dry food (kibble), wet food (pâté), or a mixed diet. Ask your veterinarian for advice to determine the best food for your cat.

4. A scratching post to protect your furniture:

Scratching is vital for a cat: grooming, stretching, marking territory. Without a scratching post, your sofa might suffer!
👉 Opt for a sisal, cardboard, or even wall-mounted scratching post, depending on the available space.

5. Cat toys to stimulate their instinct:

A happy cat is a playful cat! Toys help develop their hunting instinct, keep them active, and prevent boredom.

Among cats' favorite toys are:

  • Mice
  • Catnip pillows
  • Wand toys
  • Balls

At Azure & Gaia, our toys are handmade in France and filled with catnip, valerian, or a blend of both.

6. A comfortable bed:

It's well known that cats sleep a lot (on average 12 to 16 hours a day)! That's why they need a comfortable and quiet place. You can choose a basket, a cushion, or even a cozy and comfortable teepee for your cat.

And why not personalize their bed? 😉

7. A brush and nail clippers:

Cats need to be brushed regularly to prevent mats and hairballs. It is therefore essential to choose a brush suited to your cat's fur type.

Also consider investing in nail clippers, especially for indoor cats (don't hesitate to ask your vet to show you how before clipping their nails for the first time!)

8. A carrier or travel bag:

Finally, the last essential item: a carrier or travel bag to take your cat on vacation or to the vet! This is essential equipment to ensure your cat's safety during transport. Choose one that is suitable for your companion's size.

In summary, welcoming a cat is a serious commitment that requires preparation and thought. Once you are ready, provide them with the essential items so they can thrive in your home.
